Here, we provide a list of famous restaurants and diners in the Phoenix metro area. Use this guide to satisfy your taste buds when either visiting or living in Phoenix.

Roaring Fork
4800 N Scottsdale Rd
Scottsdale, AZ 85251
480-947-0795

Description: Don't tell chef/owner Robert McGrath that he's a pioneer in creating "New-Southwest" cuisine. That's a bit too high-falootin' for the gregarious ex-Texan who simply puts together new Western and Southwestern inspirations and dishes them out to eager patrons at his wildly-popular Western bistro and saloon. All the local awards, like Best Chef in the Valley, were impressive but didn't turn his head. Then came the James Beard Best Chef in America-Southwest award. That's for chefs whose exquisite creations are pictured in the national culinary magazines, as McGrath's are, which caused some to worry that he'd go big-time and forget his Western roots.

Crepes & Bakes
7001 N Scottsdale Rd
Scottsdale, AZ 85253
480-905-8181

Description: Breakfast here takes at least two hours, probably more. The service, as well as the food, is European. Of course that means that a meal is a dining event, not a quick stop on the way to the rest of your day. You're given enough time to sit, visit, peruse the menu and make a decision. Once you place your order, it's not coming to your table within 10 minutes, so relax. These are hand made crepes wrapped around succulent fillings that beg for your undivided attention and that means patience and, when it finally arrives, no shoveling.

Fuddruckers
7145 E Indian School Rd
Scottsdale, AZ 85251
480-946-9916

Description: A carnivore's paradise, Fuddruckers grills mega-burgers (up to an entire pound of ground beef), slaps them into fluffy homemade buns then turns diners loose on an extensive "fixin's" bar. Not just a red-meat mecca, the chain sports a menu that offers ostrich and veggie burgers, chicken sandwiches, big salads and lots of kid-pleasing choices.

P.F. Chang's China Bistro
16170 N 83rd Ave
Peoria, AZ 85382
623-412-3335

Description: P.F. Chang's -- the brainchild of Paul Fleming, executed by cuisine expert Philip Chang -- first opened its doors in Scottsdale, Arizona, in 1993. Fleming sought elegance and innovation, authenticity and exploration -- none of it easy in a chain restaurant. But he succeeded: His China Bistro is a Hot Concept winner, as well as Best Chinese Restaurant Award Winner. Chang's fiery stir-fried spicy chicken is a new take on General Tao's, and VIP Cantonese chicken mimics Peking duck preparation.

Chompie's Restaurant-Delicatessen
3202 E. Greenway Rd.
Phoenix, AZ 85032
602-971-8010

Description: Founded over 20 years ago by a family of ex-New Yorkers, Chompie's has a reputation for satisfying the most discriminating bagel connoisseurs in the Valley. In fact, there are over 35 varieties of bagels and bialys available, all baked fresh throughout the day. The quality doesn't stop with breakfast. Chompie's guarantees that every single item on the menu is homemade, including the wide array of beautiful deserts at the pastry counter. Culinary temptations include Skyscraper Sandwiches, towering meals prepared with three slices of bread and requiring at least two hands; the popular Chicken Chompadilla, a second-cousin to the quesadilla; burgers, seafood and various hot entrees.

Pita Jungle
1949 W Ray Rd, Suite 28
Chandler, AZ 85224
480-855-3232

Description: Break out your Birkenstocks and get ready for some serious people-watching at this popular healthy food Mecca. Colorful ambiance and a fun, youthful atmosphere attract everyone from starving students to health conscious professionals for vegan, vegetarian, macrobiotic and carnivorous delicacies. With locations in Tempe and Chandler, the only significant difference (other than a proximity to ASU) you'll find is the wood-fired oven in Tempe and some additional meat and seafood selections in Chandler.

Avanti Restaurant
2728 E Thomas Rd
Phoenix, AZ 85016
602-956-0900

Description: After almost three decades of the familiar black and chrome, art-deco elegance that became its trademark, Avanti underwent a facelift and almost gave its loyal patrons a heart attack. But the flowering red swatches and other changes were only cosmetic. The kitchen still provides the same award-winning fine dining experience that has been drawing locals and businesspeople since the mid-'70s. The waiters still wear tuxedos and the atmosphere remains intimate.

Ajo Al's
7458 W Bell Rd
Glendale, AZ 85308
623-334-9899

Description: For those who crave Mexican food in an upscale environment, Ajo Al's fits the bill with its trendy southwest decor of polished saltillo tile, bronze walls and wrought iron wall hangings. And it's nearly impossible to ignore the happening salsa sounds piped into the bar and dining room. The chic Camelback corridor crowd can be seen sipping Mexican martinis and various margaritas. The Mexican cuisine is part south of the border and part Arizona Southwest fusion.

Oregano's
1008 E Camelback Rd
Phoenix, AZ 85014
602-241-0707

Description: There's more to Oregano's than just pizza, but it's a great place to begin. Opt for a name-your-own topping pizza and choose from a list of 33 items. Stick with the tried and tried like pepperoni and mushroom or reach out for a little cross-cultural noshing and include feta cheese or fajita chicken. Specialties like El Picasso, Southwest Signature and the Bistro Classic rewrite the book on what pizza should be. Salads, sandwiches, soups, wings and pastas serve up even more variety. For dessert, there's a pizza cookie of course.

The Salt Cellar
550 N Hayden Rd
Scottsdale, AZ 85257
480-947-1963

Description: You'll have to go underground to the seedy end of Scottsdale to find some of the finest, most reasonably priced seafood in the Valley. Salt Cellar has a wall full of "Best Of" citations awarded over the years for the freshest aquatic fare you'll find anywhere. The place is comfy, funky, fun and spotlessly clean. A four-page menu offers seafood in all varieties -- broiled, sauteed, baked, deep-fried, sliced and steamed.
